Philip Fetter is an ordinary sixteen year-old boy until a demonic spirit possesses him, commanding him to commit a series of senseless murders. When he’s ordered to kill his own parents, Fetter denies the demon’s influence and spares them by attempting suicide. He’s rescued by an angel, but he kills her, absorbing her goodness and spirit, which battles the evil Runesmith within him. The Runesmith’s brothers attempt to free him by taking Fetter to a dimension outside of time called The Amen where he’s tortured for nine years. Finally Philip frees himself and befriends others who are similarly trapped there like he is. Together they make their escape, and journey to Earth where Philip is doomed to be the Man Who Walks Between good and evil, Saint Sinner, the patron saint of lost souls.
