Edward Gorey (1925–2000), much like an eccentric scientist in a gothic legend, brought to life from the laboratory of his mind altogether new and sometimes playfully sinister creations. Amazing and wonderful in their sardonic merriment, his drawings and stories have a special genius that resides in the effect of what is left unseen and unwritten. Following the literary tradition of the nonsense verse and somewhat surreal narratives of Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear, Gorey’s illustrated texts often guide the reader to the point just before the crescendo of events and then let the imagination draw the ominous or hilarious conclusions. Gorey’s rise to popularity as master of the amusingly strange and unexpected was not immediate. He worked as a staff artist and art director at Doubleday and at the legendary Looking Glass Library at Random House. He later freelanced as a widely respected book designer. In addition to writing and illustrating more than one hundred works, he was also a playwright, an award-winning set and costume designer, and the creator of the animated introduction to the PBS series Mystery!
